On Cozy Corner Lane there are weathered wooden houses small enough to be sheds. There are yards filled with all manner of things being fixed and salvaged for parts. In the churchyard some graves are marked with nothing but mounds of turned earth and flowers. There is a church, a graveyard, a bar, and no more than twenty houses that can be seen from the road. Only African Americans live there. Cozy Corner is an undocumented, unincorporated village with which even close neighbors are unfamiliar. It is one of the remaining freedom colonies in Texas with a legacy that I will celebrate through portraiture and documentation.
